VIGILANCE THE KEY TO MINIMISE ONLINE FRAUD

Sydney, 9 January, 2004:  The Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) today assured consumers that there were simple steps internet bank customers can take to help protect themselves against online fraud.

 

Mr Ian Gilbert, Director, ABA said the first clear protection consumers have is the certain knowledge that banks will never send their customers emails requesting their personal account details.

 

“If you receive such a request it is certain to be bogus and deleting it and informing your bank is a simple and effective precaution,” Mr Gilbert said.

 

“There are other simple steps people can take are to minimise the risk of fraud,” he said.

 

“It is recommended that customers conduct online financial transactions only using computers they know are secure.

 

“Customers should ensure that their computers are protected by up-to-date anti-virus and personal firewall software.

 

“Fraud is an issue the Australian banking industry takes very seriously and it is extremely vigilant in protecting customers and watching for fraudulent activity.

 

“Australian banks have information on their websites to ensure that their customers are aware of the steps they can take to help minimise the risk of fraud.

 

“Consumers also need to be vigilant. If a customer comes across any unauthorised transactions on their account they should immediately contact their bank.”

 

Mr Gilbert said that while any attempt at fraud was a matter of concern, the incidence of internet banking fraud in Australia is comparatively low due to the security and integrity of the banking system.

 

“This gives people who choose to bank online the comfort of knowing they can enjoy the speed, flexibility and convenience it offers while taking some important but simple precautions to secure their own computer,” Mr Gilbert said.

  

“Bank customers have the additional comfort of knowing that if it is established they have been the victim of fraud and they did not contribute to the loss then it is their bank that is liable for any loss, and not the customer,” he said.
