Strong dollar means goods are cheaper but shop safely online over the festive season

Sydney 4 Decemeber, 2009:  Strong dollar means goods are cheaper but shop safely online over the festive season
The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) expect that the strength of the Australian dollar will this year prompt more online Christmas shopping with merchants located overseas and are encouraging consumers to protect themselves when making any online purchases.

Banks and police advise when shopping online with overseas or Australian companies it is important to protect your personal information.

Banks and police have produced a fact sheet which lists some simple tips (see over) to help consumers when transacting online.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “With the Australian dollar looking strong, goods bought offshore are looking cheaper than before. Before purchasing, , it’s important that you do some research on the merchant, so that you can be confident that you are transacting with a business that you can trust and a business that will protect your personal information, including your credit or debit card details.”

“Also you should make sure that the website offers secure transactions by using encryption technology to transfer information from your computer to the online merchant’s computer. Encryption keeps information that you transfer safe.
Identify a secured website by looking for ‘https’ in the web address – an unsecured website address starts with ‘http’”.

AFP National Manager High Tech Crime Operations Neil Gaughan said: “Shopping online, while often a convenient and cost effective way to purchase products requires consumers to safeguard their personal information as they would when shopping at a physical store.”

“Consumers need to ensure they protect their personal and financial information to prevent fraud and the disappointment of financial loss when goods are not received,” Commander Gaughan said.

“There are precautions that consumers can take to reduce the risk of credit card fraud, such as using anti-virus software to protect themselves from unwanted interference.”

“Embrace the benefits offered by the online shopping experience, but do exercise caution and sound judgement at the same time.”
