REVIEW OF THE TRADE PRACTICES ACT

Sydney, 9 May, 2002: The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) says the review of the Trade Practices Act (TPA) is an opportunity to take stock and ensure the Act and its administration is fully serving the national interest.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “The banks believe strongly in the principle of competition as a mechanism to increase investment, employment growth and consumer protection.”

Mr Bell said this review is timely because the Trades Practices Act must keep pace with the impact of technology, globalisation and changing consumer demands in the financial services sector and business generally.

ABA is looking forward to actively participating in the review.
