Lights out for Earth Hour - banks participating
Sydney, 24 March, 2010: The banking sector is supporting Earth Hour by switching off the lights in landmark offices on 27 March at 8.30pm for one hour.
Businesses and households from around the world are switching off lights to help raise awareness for the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in order to tackle climate change.
The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) and our member banks are participating because Earth Hour raises awareness of the simple steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint.
Steven Münchenberg, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “Many banks have programs in place which seek to minimise the impacts of their operations on the environment. Many of these programs drive energy efficient initiatives across a range of activities undertaken by the banks.”
“Banks also provide information on how they have performed in annual reports and online, so that customers and shareholders can monitor progress. Many banks believe that managing these impacts is an important aspect of sound business management.”
