Sydney, 17 June, 2003: The Council of the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) has elected Mr John McFarlane, Chief Executive Officer of ANZ, as the new ABA Chairman.
Mr McFarlane succeeds Mr David Murray, Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Bank, who has successfully completed his two-year term as the ABA Chairman.
Upon his election as ABA Chairman, Mr McFarlane paid tribute to the work and effort of retiring Chairman, Mr Murray.
“Through a very busy and challenging time for the ABA and the industry as a whole, Mr Murray has provided valuable guidance for the sector in his role as ABA Chairman. I welcome the opportunity to continue this important work,” Mr McFarlane said.
“I look forward to working with ABA CEO, David Bell, to develop ABA policy and its direction going forward.”
Retiring Chairman, Mr Murray, congratulated Mr McFarlane on his election and thanked the industry for their efforts in supporting positive change.
“It has been a united effort from all of the ABA members, the ABA Council and the staff of the ABA in responding to the changing needs of the industry and the community,” Mr Murray said.
“It is important the banking industry has a strong industry body which works in the interests of its members and the community. The ABA’s 22-strong membership reflects good coverage of the sector and it was an important milestone when Citibank rejoined the ABA in 2002.”
“The highlight of my term as Chairman was the release of two Codes – the revised Code of Banking Practice and the new Industry Action Plan, which aims to improve access to electronic banking for people with disabilities and older Australians.”
“I have enjoyed my two years in the role and I wish Mr McFarlane well as the incoming Chairman.”
