FICA NOMINATES NEW CHAIR

13 July 2009
Media Release

The Finance Industry Council of Australia (FICA) today elected Duncan Fairweather, Executive Director of the Australian Financial Markets Association, as the new Chairman of FICA.

He takes over from Richard Gilbert who is retiring as the CEO of the Investment and Financial Services Association.    Mr Gilbert has served as Chairman of FICA for two years.

“The past couple of years have been a challenging time for the financial services industry in dealing with the fall-out from the global financial crisis and trying to ensure that Australia’s regulatory response remains relevant and proportionate.  It is vitally important for government and industry to work together to ensure that regulation is well targeted and applied while allowing the financial sector to be efficient, innovative and competitive”, said Mr Gilbert.

Mr Fairweather has been Executive Director of AFMA (previously the International Banks & Securities Association) for 8 years. Duncan has 29 years experience in public policy and government relations in the financial markets, banking, property and manufacturing industries.

The FICA Board expressed its appreciation to Richard Gilbert for his leadership over the last 2 years.
