CITIBANK AUSTRALIA RE-JOINS THE AUSTRALIAN BANKERS’ ASSOCIATION

Sydney, September 9, 2002: The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) has welcomed the return of Citibank Australia, a member of the world’s largest financial services firm, Citigroup to its membership.

Citibank’s membership renewal follows an absence of almost three years and is in line with its strategy to increase its presence in the Australian marketplace.

Citibank Consumer Bank Managing Director, Les Matheson, said the decision to rejoin the ABA followed a considered review of the organisation’s management and performance.

“It is important the banking industry has a strong industry body which works in the interests of its members and the community,” Mr Matheson said.

“The ABA’s mission of improving the economic wellbeing of Australians by fostering a banking system recognised as one of the safest, dynamic and most efficient in the world, sits well with Citibank Australia’s goals,” Mr Matheson said.

Chairman of the ABA, David Murray, said: “The ABA is looking forward to the contribution of a bank with a global orientation and its perspective on the many issues in regulatory affairs that effects the Australian financial services sector.

“At a time when there is global uncertainty on financial markets, the Australian banking sector is safe, secure, well managed and tightly regulated.”

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “The addition of Citibank Australia will broaden the scope of the ABA membership and I am looking forward to their participation.”

The ABA’s membership will now stand at 23 banks which range from traditional retail, trading bank-style organisations to regional banks, foreign and wholesale banks.
