Sydney, 11 April, 2003: Banks will help distribute an information kit on different types of drought assistance, prepared by the NSW Government, to drought affected families and businesses.
In addition, bank staff in drought-affected areas of NSW will also help people with enquiries about the application forms for Exceptional Circumstances (EC) assistance.
This pledge of support from the banks followed a meeting of the NSW Drought Strategy Team, led by State Drought Coordinator Geoff File, and included representatives from the Australian Bankers’ Association, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, National Australia Bank, Rabobank Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation, as well as Wesfarmers Landmark and Elders.
David Bell, Chief Executive of the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA), said: “Assisting our communities through this difficult drought is a team effort, and banks are more than willing to play their part.”
“Banks announced their comprehensive disaster relief packages last year because they recognise the drought has placed additional burdens on farmers and their families and, therefore, required special consideration and understanding by financial institutions.”
“The banks’ relief packages provide practical help by giving some immediate financial relief to those most need of assistance, as well as improved prospects for maintaining a viable farming business. These packages complement the assistance being provided by State and Federal Governments."
