BANKS ALREADY HELPING THOSE AFFECTED BY ANSETT'S TROUBLES
Sydney, 11 October 2001: The Australian Bankers’ Association says Senator Stephen Conroy should be aware that banks announced at the time of Ansett’s difficulties became known how they would be helping people who may be affected by the airline’s situation.
David Bell, Chief Executive of the Australian Bankers’ Association, said: “Banks have already made it clear that they will sympathetically consider reasonable requests from customers experiencing some form of financial hardship as a result of Ansett’s difficulties and we know that customers have already contacted their banks.”
“They were asked to identify themselves as having been affected by the Ansett situation, so that their concerns could be assessed and appropriate assistance provided.”
“Some member banks have already announced relief packages, others will examine individual circumstances and discuss how they can best assist these customers.”
“Depending on the customers’ circumstances, banks have deferred repayments and also looked at more suitable loans structures.”
