Sydney, 27 June, 2003:  The Australian Bankers’ Association welcomes Treasurer Peter Costello’s announcement of appointments to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) – Chairman, Dr John Laker, Deputy Chairman, Ross Jones, and Member, Mr Stephen Somogyi.

David Bell, CEO of the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA), is looking forward to working with Dr Laker, Mr Jones and Mr Somogyi under the new and enhanced governance structure at APRA.

Mr Bell said Dr Laker, Mr Jones and Mr Somogyi will bring a depth of experience on public policy to the regulator and that their strong knowledge of the financial services sector will be an asset.

The banking industry thanks the work of the previous board - retiring Chairman, Dr Jeffrey Carmichael, and Chief Executive Officer, Graeme Thompson.

The Australian banking system is one of the best and safest in the world and Australia’s prudential regulation has played an important role.
