BANKING INDUSTRY STILL NEGOTIATING WITH VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT ON ATM PLAN

Sydney, 20 February, 2004: The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) said security is a top priority for all banks and the industry has been working with the Victorian Government on the ATM plan to achieve the best possible outcome for bank customers.

At yesterday’s meeting between banks and the Victorian Government in Melbourne, banks offered new statewide guidelines on ATM customer safety and a study of monitored closed circuit television cameras on selected ATMs.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said he was surprised and disappointed that the Victorian Police Minister, Andre Haermeyer, said he will introduce legislation when the banking industry is still in good faith negotiations.

The meeting with the Victorian Government yesterday reached agreement, subject to some fine-tuning, on a number of key points including:

·      a statewide introduction of new guidelines for ATM customer safety;

·      a study of monitored closed circuit television cameras on selected ATMs;

·      a review of security at all Victorian ATMs; and

·      the extension of these guidelines to all ATM deployers.

Banks have long established security and risk assessment guidelines in place to ensure that all ATMs are safely sited and, as a result, there are hundreds of ATM cameras already in place in Victoria.

The banking industry wants to achieve resolution on these issues and looks forward to further discussions at another meeting which will soon be held with the Victorian Government.
