BANKING INDUSTRY MOURNS THE LOSS OF MR ED O’NEAL
ABA salutes the contribution, leadership and commitment of Mr Ed O’Neal
Sydney, 17 September, 2001: The Australian banking industry is mourning the loss of a great banking leader and contributor - Mr Ed O’Neal, Deputy Chairman of the Australian Bankers’ Association and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of St George Bank Ltd.
Mr David Murray, Chairman of the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA), said: “Ed O’Neal was extremely well liked, respected and admired throughout the industry.
“Mr O’Neal’s contribution to the industry will not be forgotten, and his leadership and guidance on crucial industry issues will be sorely missed.”
“Our thoughts are with Mr O’Neal’s family at this difficult time and we express deep sympathy for their loss.”
Mr O’Neal was first elected as the ABA’s Deputy Chairman in May 2000 and was recently re-elected for another term in May 2001.
David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, also paid tribute to Mr O’Neal’s service to the industry.
“Mr O’Neal was always very supportive of the industry body and was committed to its objectives.”
“We all feel deeply for Mr O’Neal’s family and, of course, for St George staff who are today also mourning his loss.”
