Bank shares and dividends
Dividends paid
Profits made by Australian banks are crucial to the returns of Australia’s superannuation funds which assist Australians saving for retirement and to provide income for retirees. Dividends are paid out of company profits - such as banks - to their shareholders.
In 2010, a record level of $15.8 billion in dividend payments was made to shareholders.
Over the last five years, dividend payouts to ordinary shareholders have totalled $70 billion.

Shares on issue
At the end of 2010 there were around 11.4 billion ordinary shares on issue by Australian retail banks.
Banks are popular shares chosen by shareholders. Of the four major banks, the number of shareholders ranges from 400,000 shareholders to 800,000 shareholders.
