BANK BRANCHES UP 10% OVER LAST 6 YEARS

Sydney, 8 November, 2007: The number of bank branches has increased for the sixth successive year, according to a survey released today by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).

Over the past six years (since the survey began in 2001), banks have increased their branch network to 5264 – an increase of 475 or 10%. In the last year, the increase is 117 branches which is a rise of 2.3% (see over Table 1).

David Bell, Chief Executive of the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA), said: “The trend has been for banks to open branches in growth areas where population and business activity are increasing. The increases in bank branches have been spread across all States and Terrorities.

“It is pleasing to see that in remote and very remote areas of Australia, bank branches have increased significantly over the last two years1.  Future openings are dependant on market conditions.”

The main findings from the 2007 APRA survey shows in the past six years:

  • Banks’ branch level of service increased by 475 or 10%;
  • Other bank face-to-face services such as agencies in small businesses (e.g. newsagents) increased by 262 or 9%;
  • Total face-to-face services provided by banks increased by 737 or 9.6%;
  • Bank@Post2 outlets increased by 480 or 17%; and
  • Total face-to-face points of presence (all Authorised Deposit-Taking Institutions) have increased by 1314 or 10.7%.

Note for Table 2:* ARIA (Accessibility/Remoteness Index of Australia) is a classification of postcodes in Australia in decreasing order of accessibility. Further details on this classification and the interpretation of the categories can be found at Weblink: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubs-hfsocc-ocpanew14a.htm which also provides a map illustrating the concept.
