Australian Bankers’ Association comments on Queensland CMC report

Sydney, 23 July, 2009: The Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) has published a report which sets out evidence suggesting Queensland Police misused money in a fund which they had set up in 1999 to pay informants for information regarding bank robberies.

At that time, the Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) provided $10 000 to the fund on behalf of its members.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “We are very disappointed by the way Queensland Police have dealt with our funds. That’s why we are calling on them to pay back the $10 000.

“When the money is returned, the ABA intends to donate it to Crime Stoppers - the 24-hour telephone line for receiving information about criminal and illegal activity.”
