Sydney, January 30, 2002: The Australian Bankers’ Association is aware of recent media attention relating to an alleged credit card scam involving the security of credit card information at CityLink, Victoria.
David Bell, Chief Executive of the Australian Bankers’ Association, said: “There are a number of steps a consumer should take to ascertain if the security of their credit card has been breached.”
“As always, customers should check all transactions on their credit card accounts and advise their bank or credit card issuer if any unauthorised transactions are identified, ” Mr Bell said.
“If you do find an unauthorised transaction, immediately telephone your bank, because any unauthorised transaction will be fully investigated by the bank.”
“On completion of the investigation, full reimbursement will be made for any fraudulent transactions debited to your credit card account as a result of this alleged scam.”
“It is difficult for criminals to gain access to your credit card simply with a credit card number.”
“For security reasons, when making most purchases over the telephone or on the Internet, the card holder’s name and card expiry date is needed to complete a transaction. As I understand, only credit card numbers have been posted on the Internet site.”
