ABA WELCOMES SATURDAY TRADING FOR BANKS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Sydney, 1 October, 2004: The Australian Bankers’ Association (ABA) welcomes the law change in Western Australia to allow banks to open on Saturdays.

David Bell, Chief Executive of the ABA, said: “This now creates a level playing field for financial service providers. Previously, the credit unions and building societies could open on Saturdays, but banks could not, because the rules did not apply to non-bank financial institutions.”

“We are pleased to see that WA has moved in line with all other States and Territories in changing these antiquated laws.”

Banks are now free to make a commercial decision on whether to open their doors on Saturdays.
