ABA MOVES TO CLEAR THE AIR ON DIRECT DEBIT ARRANGEMENTS WITH ONE.TEL

Sydney, 20 June, 2001: Sydney, June 20, 2001: The Australian Banker's Association (ABA) today moved to help customers who have direct debit arrangements with One.Tel and other suppliers understand what they can do to cancel those authorities.

David Bell, Chief Executive of ABA, said: "Some customers have expressed concern about wanting to cancel their Direct Debit Requests with One.Tel."

"ABA wants to make it clear that ABA member banks* will act on instructions to stop payment of any direct debit from their account for One.Tel under a Direct Debit Request," he said.

"Customers should also read carefully their contractual arrangements with One.Tel so that they fully understand the ramifications of cancelling their direct debit requests."

Mr Bell said unauthorised debits to credit cards will be treated as unauthorised transactions and will be treated as a charge back Ð which means your account will be refunded.
