ABA APPOINTS NEW CEO

Sydney, 16 January, 2001: The Chairman of the Australian Bankers' Association (ABA), Frank Cicutto, today announced the appointment of David Bell as the new Chief Executive Officer of the ABA.

Mr Cicutto said that Mr Bell's appointment represents a critical element in the building of the ABA.

"With his strong background in communications, public policy and public affairs, Mr Bell will focus on building a strong, broadly-based industry association which will benefit its members and Australia," Mr Cicutto said.

The ABA plays a crucial role representing industry views to governments, other decision-makers and the community. It also has a responsibility to improve public awareness and understanding of the industry's contribution to the community with a strong emphasis on consultation with stakeholders.

Immediately prior to his appointment as CEO of the ABA, David Bell was General Manager for Corporate Affairs and Communications at the NRMA. In this executive role he was responsible for external and internal communications, issues management, government relations, public policy development, regulatory affairs, as well as investor relations.

Previously he was Group Manager with Telstra in a senior corporate affairs role, Managing Director of a leading lobbying and financial communications company Gavin Anderson & Kortlang, a business strategy consultant with Anderson Consulting, and Chief of Staff to former NSW Minister and National Party leader Ian Armstrong.

Mr Bell is also a non-executive director of Next Systems Ltd; a medium-sized information technology and systems integration company.

Mr Bell will commence his new role on Monday 29 January.
